Rapid City's juniors and seniors paraded in towering heels and shiny dress shoes up to the Chapel in the Hills on Saturday afternoon.
The sharply dressed prom goers flooded the grounds of the Norwegian-style church to pose for countless photographs -- these amateur photo sessions are as much a part of the Rapid City prom experience as the classic springtime dance.
Chapel manager Craig Lewis estimated about 1,000 students cheap guest dresses, friends and family converged at the church for the unofficial event. He said he wasn't certain when the tradition began.
Lewis made sure the church was staffed and ready for prom night.
"We open the grounds and the chapel up for the high schools here in town to come and take pictures," Lewis said. "We've had one traffic jam; other than that Designer Prom Dresses, it's gone pretty well."
Dressed in a white suit, black dress shirt and yellow tie, Kittrick Jeffries A-Line prom dresses, a senior at Stevens High School, enjoyed the atmosphere cheap Formal dresses, which seemed to vibrate from all of the anticipation and excitement of the night to come.
"It's just a tradition," Jeffries said. "Everyone that I've ever known has gone to Chapel in the Hills."
Jeffries' expectations for the evening avoided Hollywood's prom hype and centered on hopes for danceable music and a good night with friends. Despite a scuffed dress shoe, the day was going well for Jeffries, who was attending the festivities with about 15 classmates including his good guy friend.
"We're like best friends," Jeffries said. "It's kind of like a bromance."
Central High School junior Kari Nicholson squeezed next to her two friends so her mother could snap a photo of them in their prom dresses.
With cameras pointed every which way around the church, Nicholson was finding the start of her prom night a little overwhelming.
"It's been kind of stressful Formal dresses," Nicholson said.
The stress was likely to fade as her group headed to a backyard barbecue and potluck before the joint Central/Stevens dance at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
The upperclassmen at St. Thomas More joined the frenzy, spending part of their afternoon lining up for photographs at Chapel in the Hills.
Junior Maddie Merriam visited with friends outside the church, looking forward to the night ahead of her.
"I didn't think I was going to be this excited grad dresses, but once I got here Bridesmaid dresses, and seeing everyone and how great they looked plus size prom dresse, it's definitely exceeded my expectations cheap Cocktail dresses," Merriam said.Topics related articles:
