Default purple prom dresses6Secondhand Prom D,53Formal dre

With racks of colorful ball gownsformal dresses, in all their glittery purple prom dresses, beaded and satiny glory, the scene at Blake High School on Saturday wasn’t unlike a pricey boutique.
PTSA volunteers were on hand to offer shoppers homemade brownies cheap prom dresses, deli crackers and bottled water. Potential buyers were assisted by helpful attendants. A rack of matching shoes was helpfully positioned near the door.
For all of this, however, Blake’s “New to You” prom dress sale, held in conjunction with Sherwood High School, offered gently used formals for no more than about $40. That’s a fraction of what some upperclassmen may pay for prom gowns at department stores or boutiques.
Adele Leishin, a junior at Blake, said most of the gowns she’s been eyeing at various places go for $140 to $240.
She stopped into the makeshift store to see if she could find something a bit cheaper.
“You have to have the perfect dress,” Leishin said. “I just have to see what I like. I’m not going to spend a bunch of money on it.”
Shekara McEachern, a senior at Blake, feels the same way. She’s still looking for the perfect dress and hopes to stay within a $100 budget for prom.
McEachern was helping out at the sale, which she was partly responsible for bringing to the school. The expenses of prom made her go to her counselor with an idea to sell used dresses. Blake’s PTSA President Robina Bartlow was already working on the dress sale, it turned out cheap Bridesmaid dresses, and the two began to work together.
Bartlow was inspired by Sherwood’s PTSA, which has held the sale before.
“It’s a very expensive proposition, going to prom plus size prom dresse 2011,” Bartlow said. She should know—her daughter’s a senior at Blake and currently navigating the world of prom.
“Some [students] are not going to prom because of the expense and opting to come to the after-prom because it’s much cheaper Formal dresses,” she said.
McEachern is feeling the pinch, not only from prom cheap Cocktail dresses, but from all of the senior activities she wants to experience.
“Everything is going on right now,” she said. “College A-Line dresses, scholarships … then you do want to have the one experience that is prom and after-prom, senior banquet and graduation.
“There’s a lot to pay for now long prom dresses,” McEachern continued.
Spurts of potential customers came in groups of twos and threes to look at dresses on Saturday. Mid-day, Bartlow said they’d sold about nine dresses, but that many girls had tried on the wares.
Proceeds from the sale will go to the PTSA at Blake, and specifically to fund the after-prom party at Sherwood.
Correction: A previous version of this story misspelled McEachern's last name.
