How to treat shin splints often requires minimal activity to the injured area. Shin splints are the result of an injury to the shin of the lower front part of the leg. The medical term is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. It is a pain that results from an injury to the tendons in the lower leg. This pain in the shin is the result of trauma to the muscle's tendons where they are attached to the tibia. When the tendons are torn away from the bone it results in a shin splint.
A shin splint injury belongs to a group of injuries called overuse injuries. They are very common in runners and for individuals that do a lot of fast paced walkers. This injury causes pain along the shin of the leg. If the symptoms are ignored and the individual continues to apply stress to the injury, the pain will get worse.
Shin splints may be the result of not properly stretching and warming up the muscles before strenuous sports activities. Running or jumping on hard surfaces may also result in this injury. Starting then suddenly stopping a strenuous activity, like fast running, may also cause this condition to occur. Runners that quickly run uphill or downhill may also get it. Shin splints are diagnosed with a simple examination of the inflamed area on the legs. The physician will make note of the areas where tenderness and pain is centralized. This type of injury will require emergency treatment to prevent total loss of use of the leg.
