The award includes a £200,000 prize, access to high-profile mentors, and a bespoke mentoring programme tailored to assist the young designer in achieving his business goals over the next year, and, through this network of career contacts, spearhead his transition from a developing creative business to a global fashion brand.
The award was established as a key part of the BFC's 25th anniversary "legacy programme", to further enhance the reputation of London's rising stars and assist in the development of their businesses.
Erdem Moralioglu was raised in Montreal by his Turkish father and English mother, and studied fashion in both
Canada and England. He received his master's degree from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2003, and worked for Diane von Furstenberg, in New York, before returning to London to launch his own label in 2005.
In a short space of time, the label Erdem has become renowned for its mix of bold and unusual colour combinations, curvaceous tailoring and intricate, digital floral prints, spiced with a whimsical revival of embroidery, and flattering details. More than anything women love his ability to make grown-up clothes which look pretty, without being over-sweet.
Apart from his "first ladies' fan club",
Go Outings With Moncler_515, the designer's gowns have been seen frequently on the red carpet, worn by stars such as Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Ashley Olsen, Chloe Sevigny, Thandie Newton, Kirsten Dunst, Claudia Schiffer, and Anna Friel.
In 2007, Erdem won the Swarovski British Fashion Council Fashion Enterprise Award, and followed that with the BFC's Fashion Forward award, in 2008. In 2009, Elle Magazine awarded Erdem the "Fashion Future Award" at the Elle Style awards in London. His autumn/winter 2009 show was listed on Style.com's rundown of top 10 shows of the season. He was also nominated for the prestigious Swiss Textile Award and The British Fashion Council's 2009, "Collection of the Year Award".
Erdem is now sold globally in more than 50 premier department and speciality stores, such as Barney's New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Harvey Nichols, Dover St. Market, Colette, Browns , Ikram, Beams, MyTheresa.com, Banner, Luisa via Roma and net-a-porter.com.
Erdem Moralioglu was chosen for the first BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund award, from a shortlist of eight designers, who were judged by a panel of fund sponsor representatives and fashion industry experts, chaired by Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue. His submission stood out for his label's strong design signature and clear vision for the immediate development and growth of his business.
The remaining seven - Angel Jackson, Christopher Kane, Clements Ribeiro, E. Tautz, Marios Schwab, Nicholas Kirkwood and Richard Nicoll - will also have access to support from the mentoring panel either directly or through Marigay McKee, the Director of Fashion and Beauty at Harrods, who will chair the mentoring panel.
The Fund was launched by the BFC Chairman, Harold Tillman, in September 2008, and is seen as a natural progression from other emerging talent schemes such as NewGen,
~ ~ The old end, new beginning ~ ~, supported by Topshop, and Fashion Forward. British Vogue, the fund's headline sponsor, will showcase the talents of all eight finalists, in its May issue, available in early April.
"I am thrilled to be the winner of the BFC Vogue Fashion Fund. It is an honor," Erdem Moralioglu said. "The prize will help us to take our business to the next level. It is so integral for us to be showing in London and the support of the BFC and Vogue will allow us to grow our business internationally."
BFC Chairman, Harold Tillman, commented: "Erdem has excellent design credentials, an impressive business plan and creates beautiful collections season after season. I am proud to say that the British Fashion Council's Vogue Designer Fashion Fund will play a key role in developing Erdem's already prominent designer business both here in the UK and abroad."
"He (Erdem) makes beautiful clothes that already have a recognisable stamp that is his alone," said Alexandra Shulman.
