We had been totally enthralled when we first picked up the wonderful 208-page Photographers@Microsoft coffee table book. So we tracked down Larry Golden, among the driving forces behind finding the next hefty volume published, to obtain his consider around the Microsoft photographers’ community, being published in a Library of Congress guide, and the thrill of having one of his photos selected as Bing’s photo from the day.

1st, the book: Tell us how the Photographers @ Microsoft guide come about.
Three years ago, a few Microsoft employees—Daniel Moore, Bernard Hymmen and Tanka Sunuwar to name a few—who had been photography enthusiasts said,
Office 2010 Home And Student cl, “Hey, we’ve got this idea, what if we made a book?” So they got together, started months in advance and put together a timeline and a list of specs. They started a photo selection committee with multiple judges then took the top 146 submissions from other Microsoft employees.
And they did this outside their normal jobs?
Yes, the project was done with all volunteer hours. Microsoft matches US employees $17 for every hour volunteered,
Microsoft Office 2010 32 bits, so there was probably $10,000 donated to the United Way of King County just from those hours.
This year, for Volume Two, it was even a bit more because we had more people, and it was a larger process. We raised the money for United Way Worldwide this year. Before matching,
Microsoft Office 2010 Generator, it was $30,000. After matching it was about $45,000 with about $17,000 in man-hours. So, a little over $60,
Office 2010 Activation cl,000 went to the United Way from Photographers@Microsoft.How were the final photographs selected?
For Volume Two, the submission period lasted a month, and employees were allowed to submit up to five photos each. We ended up with over 1900 photos that had been sent to the judges, and they narrowed it down from there over a two-week process.
But of all those employees who submitted, there were people from 50 different countries, all with the Microsoft campuses—from Hungary and Sweden to China and Japan—everyone from all over the company submitted photos.
Wow. And it seems like employees also must travel quite extensively to shoot photos.
Many of the photographers may be based in the US, but they’ve traveled about the world,
Microsoft Office Home And Student 2010 Product Key, like I recently went to Iceland. So there are people who took them when they were travelling for Microsoft on Microsoft duties. For other people—I think the benefits we have here, the vacation and the pay, allows them to travel.
How do all these photographers connect at Microsoft?
We have an email distribution list, which consists of photographers who range from “I just bought a camera” to “I’ve been shooting for 25 years.” They shoot anything from models, landscapes and star photography to microscope photography—everything from point-and-shoot to SLR and even film. It’s probably one of the most active distributions lists with a couple of hundred emails back and forth a day.
Are you ever surprised at the number of talented photographers here?
It really surprised me just the sheer number of people who actively take pictures. There are also little groups on Flickr and Meetup that get out there. It’s just a wide breath of people. It’s truly amazing to see the skill and talent that Microsoft brings in and to find out they have a hobby similar to yours. And some great shots.
Can we expect a Volume Three?
Yes. I am actually going to lead the project next year, but we have a committee that makes the decisions. We’re meeting now to discuss how we make things different. So what we are thinking about is adding captions in the bleed with camera, speed and f-stop facts. We’re also planning on boosting our website and get more detail behind the photographers.
We’d also like to get more people into the guide and if we can do that we can likely double or triple sales and contributions. We printed a thousand copies this year and we sold 650. But this year we had an ISBN, so now people can say they had been published in a Library of Congress Book.
On a personal note, tell us about acquiring your shot featured as the photo from the day on Bing?
The image is Moulton Barn out in Wyoming in the Grand Tetons. It’s in Moose, eight miles north of Jackson Hole. For this shot I got up and took this one about a half hour after sunrise. There had been about a half a dozen photographers down there; it’s the most photographed barn in the world. It’s a gorgeous backdrop, and there had been about forty buffalo out there.
It seems like once a month a Microsoft employee gets a photo of their image up as the photo from the day on Bing.
