THE Sixties might have a strong showing in some of the key collections of this season so far - but Nicole Farhi says it is the Nineties that she was reminiscing about when designing her autumn/winter 2010-11 collection.
But it is the Nineties references that interestingly already feel retro. "Drawstring waistbands on skirts came up before twenty years ago, and so did all this?macramé and these simple dresses that have something going on at the back,
alife," goes on Farhi, presenting the voluminous back layer of a black shift. "But of course you have to move it all on because otherwise the references become too literal - today's lengths are much shorter. In the Nineties this was all at the mid calf, now they are knee-length or higher."

In the main inspired by Frank Gehry architecture - and therefore featuring beautiful silk dresses whose prints ripple across a zillion fine pleats and other more robust ones of nubbly tweed overlaid in chiffon - this collection is one much better appreciated up close than on the catwalk,
