Pakistani Minister Seeks Pardon for Christian Woman
Pakistan’s minister for minority affairs has recommended that a Christian mother of five sentenced to death for blasphemy be pardoned or released from prison if her pending court appeal is not quickly addressed.

Bhatti’s report said the case against Bibi, who has been in prison for nearly 18 months, was filed “on the grounds of religious and personal enmity.” It recommended providing security both to her in prison and to her family, who say they have gone into hiding because of death threats.

Hundreds of conservative Muslim demonstrators in the eastern city of Lahore Wednesday threatened violence if Bibi is released and urged the president not to pardon her.
The findings also recommended amendments to Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law. Bhatti said Mr. Zardari Thursday called for the creation of a committee to “review” the law and indicated he will pardon Bibi if her court appeal languishes.
