Classes, number coding suspended

The devastation wrought by “Ondoy" prompted Teodoro to declare the suspension of classes at all levels in Metro Manila and in Rizal on Monday.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority general manager Roberto Nacianceno told dzBB radio that the number coding scheme in the metropolis would be suspended from September 28 (Monday) to October 2 (Friday).

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Sunday visited the Ortigas Extension area in Pasig City to extend her sympathies to residents whose houses have been submerged in deep floodwaters since Saturday.

In his report, GMA News’ Jiggy Manicad said Mrs. Arroyo was accompanied by Press Secretary Cerge Remonde and did not reach the flooded areas.

He said rescue efforts were ongoing in the area, and up to ten life rafts and rubber boats were being used to ferry residents to safer ground.

Some residents, however, attempted to return to their homes to get some of their belongings.

Volunteers from the Philippine National Red Cross also had to rescue Joy Belmonte, an eight months' pregnant woman who was about to give birth. She had to be transferred to another hospital from the Mission Hospital, which had run out of supplies and medicines. - GMANews.TV
