EXETER ― Just inside the front door of George & Phillips Water Street location, there is a quote from Bill Bowerman, coaching pioneer and co-founder of nike(we wholesale nike shoes, cheap nike air max, cheap nike max 2012).
Describing his coaching style, Bowerman said, "It's a matter of fitting your current practices to fit the event and the individual. See, what's good for you might not be worth a darn for the next guy."
The quote could also fit Bowerman's other passion, running shoes. What's good for one runner, may be completely wrong for another.
"Absolutely," George & Phillips owner Bert Freedman said in agreement. "There are so many styles of shoes, and so many times, a runner will come in looking for what their buddy has. But what is good for their buddy may not be the right shoe for them."
Right now on the walls of the 91-year-old Exeter sporting goods staple, there are upwards of 140 styles of shoes for men and women combined, each coming with different styles, structure and color.
"Each shoe company, while similar in nature, is very different," Freedman said. "So many people come in and ask, 'Who makes the best shoe?' and there really isn't an answer, just because of the differences that come with each model."
Today's running shoes(if you want to buy some discount nike shox shoes, you can go to china nike shoes shop.they not only providecheap nike shox ,but also provide cheap handbags) are quite a bit different from when Bowerman ruined his wife's waffle iron creating soles in the early 1970s.
"Shoe companies change the materials they use, which then in turn changes how a shoe may fit," said Sybil Carven, a Kittery Point, Maine resident,油泵, an avid runner and a former Adidas representative. "I think the biggest misconception is that because you bought the shoe once doesn't necessarily mean that the next version of the same shoe will be exactly the same and fit exactly the same."
"The footwear industry is heading toward a more minimalistic version of footwear," Carven said. "Ever since the Vibram shoes and barefoot running have become popular; footwear companies are using less material, making shoes lighter."
"The new barefoot, or minimal aspect shoes are a great novel approach," Freedman said. "It adds a whole different aspect to running. But it's not made for everyone. Most were made to complement running shoes instead of replacing them."
Knowing your foot is the most important aspect in buying running shoes. Being properly fitted and selecting a shoe that matches your arch shape are called the two most important factors in buying a shoe, experts say.
"Confidence in my shoe is important," said Victoria Arel of Gonic. "While there is an abundance of running gear available, you really need good shoes. I am an older runner, and I don't run for speed, I run to stay healthy and that includes my knees, ankles, back, so a good shoe is key."
Correct sizing is important, too.
"One of the biggest mistakes is that they buy a shoe too small," Carven said. "Just because you wear an 8 in a street shoe, doesn't mean you wear an 8 running shoe. You need to allow a thumbnail's width between the shoe and your big toe. Remember, your feet expand as you sweat and work out."
The mechanics of each runner is a consideration, too. Does a runner's stride roll slightly inward, or roll outward upon impact?
"They make shoes for all price points, as well as foot types," Carven said. "Obviously, the lower price points are made with less expensive material. Another mistake is the wrong type of shoe. There are different foot types, over-pronators, supinators, and neutral runners, also people with high arches."
Kristine Thibault has been running for nearly 20 years, competing in several different 5K races as well as several half-marathons. Last week, Thibault finished her first Boston Marathon, but an issue with her running shoe almost ended her chance of competing.
"I had never in all my years of running had an issue with my shoes," Thibault said. "Halfway through my training, I started doing longer miles one day a week. After a 17-mile run, I felt pain at the front of my left foot. I thought it was just overuse, but after two weeks it didn't go away."
An MRI had found tissue damage from overuse, putting Thibault's start in the marathon in jeopardy.
"I had found out the stability was great inside the sneaker, but because I prone out a bit when I run, it was throwing me off, putting pressure on the top of my left foot. So I went with a little more neutral shoe and got some great gel inserts and never had a problem again."
"It is really important to find out what type of foot you have and what type of shoe you need," Carven said. "Whether you are a walker, runner or fitness enthusiast, your feet are important in the overall performance of your body. If you think about it, they hold us up, for a long time."
