To begin with open up notepad and create a simple html page like this;
Now we're going to link to a site. I will write url instead of the web address but you should place http://www.anysite.com where I write "url". The simplest type of link would be the web address on the page. When you click that text it sends you to the

So, a link is defined by the tag (the "a" stands for anchor, this isn't very important). Within the tag you include the destination of the link i.e. the "href" of the link. Here you place the url that you want to link to inside inverted commas, href="http://www.anysite.com". Finally, the text that you want to actually display on your page is placed between the tags (the tags like all other tags are invisible when viewed in your browser.
Place this link between the tags in your html page and save it as "link.html" so that it looks like this.

Open the page in your browser and you will have a blank white screen with your link in the top left hand corner.
Change around the Anchor Text...
Links are sometimes called "Anchors". The Anchor text is the text that is actually displayed on the website in your browser. It is the text you placed between the tag. What this text is, is completely up to you. You could change it to Sandwich. Try it and see the difference.
Integrating Links into your text...
Putting a link in the middle of a sentence is simple. Take the sentence "Heres a link to shoe if you want to search for something."
Now choose the word you want the link to be activated by, in this case "shoe", and enclose it between your link tags.

You can enclose any word or every word depending on where you place the link tags. Try the following example in your page to see what I mean.

Open a new window with your link...
The most simple way to open a new window with a link is by adding "target="_blank"" after the "href" in the tag

The word "target" refers to the name of the browser window you want the link to open. "_blank" is a command to open a new blank page with no name. You can change this however to anything you like
If you want you could change it to "linkwindow".

But for the most part you will have no need to use anything other that _blank.
