Daley chases 'unstoppable' Chinese divers (AFP)
SHANGHAI (AFP) – Dethroned world diving champion Tom Daley turned his thoughts to next year's London Olympics after defeat in Shanghai, saying he needs to be more consistent to keep up with the dominant Chinese. The British teenager Sunday finished in fifth coach store place in the men's 10m platform behind Qiu Bo, whose victory sealed a magnificent clean sweep of all 10 diving events for China on home turf. Daley, 17, competing despite the death of his father from cancer in May, said he would now go home and focus on improving his consistency. "I am happy with fifth place. Obviously, I'd have loved to have been on the rostrum," he said. "That's something I need to work on at home, go home and do the consistency, do more volume on the dives and hopefully be more comfortable in competition," he added. Daley, who became an overnight star in Britain after winning the title at the Rome world championships in 2009 aged just 15, spoke of the difficulty of catching the Chinese. "Qiu Bo at the moment seems unstoppable to be honest. He's winning by such big margins. It's going to be interesting to see how he cheap insanity copes with the pressure of the Olympics because it will be his first Olympic Games. "The thing is you just have to do as well as you can. There's nothing I can do to change his performance. All I can do is focus on the process of my dives and try to do them as best I can on the day." And he said the home support at next year's London Games could play a major role as he bids for Olympic glory. "The home support is something that's going to be a big factor because the crowd on your side is something that really gives you adrenaline, gives you extra oomph." Daley admitted the lead-up pink coach to the world championships had been difficult following his father's death. "I'm glad to be here. It's obviously PLN/HKD been a tough few months. I'm here and I'm doing it because I love doing it. It's something I've always wanted to do and now I'm looking forward to next year." Daley's coach Andy Banks also talked about the need for greater consistency, praising the teenager for performing after all that he had had to cope with. "It could have been better, it could have been a lot worse too and we've got a year" before the Olympics, he said. British media said Daley had decided to take a break from school from January to focus on his Olympic bid.
