I'm gearing up for an interview with Microsoft. I’m prepared for the technical questions, but want to know what non-technical "soft skills" I should focus on in my interview. Any suggestions? My Bases Covering All My Bases:
In Part I of my answer, I explained The Three P’s of Microsoft: Passion, Potential and People and I focused specifically on how to convey "Passion" during the hiring process. want to continue the conversation and discuss "Potential." When hiring, it’s rare to find the ideal candidate who has 100% of the skills required for a given role. Therefore, we tend to hire people based on both short term and long term potential.

The truth is that it’s combination of art and skill on the part of the interviewer. That said, the candidate must supply the information that helps the interviewer to arrive at the conclusion that the candidate has high potential.

1) Are you the kind of person who needs to understand how things work, inside and out? Share examples of this with your interviewer. Have you taken your car/motorcycle/bicycle apart in your garage and then put it all back together? If so, what did you do in the process to make it work better? 2) The interviewer will also observe the approach you use to answer questions. Any question can be answered in multiple ways. As long as your fundamentals are strong and you have the creative, curious, problem solving mindset - you have the potential that we seek.

Engineers are accustomed to facts and concrete results. Demonstrating something as abstract as potential may seem very subjective.
