Gates Declares US Commitment to Asia

The U.S. defense secretary has reassured Asians that the United States intends to remain engaged in the region’s security.

Gates is in Hanoi for a meeting of defense ministers from the 10-member Association of South East Asian countries and its dialogue partners.
Issues expected to be brought up at the meeting include peacekeeping, search and rescue missions, disaster relief and Americans still listed as missing in action from the Vietnam War.
Gates also said the United States shares with Vietnam and other countries “a common interest in maritime security and freedom of access to the global commons.”
