(a) Secured and unprotected forests in 1990 for your main island of Sumatra and the smaller sized island of Siberut, like adjacent unprotected land lying inside 10 km of protected area (PA) boundaries and the wider unprotected landscape,Cheap Office 2007, and showing the spatial distribution of the 1264 sample cells (25 km2). (b) Remaining forests in 2000, deforestation and logging trails taking place in the course of the interval 1990–2000 (UTM projection,Office Standard 2007, WGS84). Parks in Sumatra could reduce deforestation in adjacent unprotected areas

The establishment of safeguarded locations on the Indonesian island of Sumatra may possibly have served reduce deforestation in adjacent unprotected areas,Office 2010 Home And Student, reviews new investigation revealed in Journal of Biogeography. The results operate counter to current scientific studies elsewhere that suggest the establishment of nature reserves attracts improvement projects and migrants to surrounding locations, undermining general conservation efforts.
Analyzing 98 LANDSAT satellite images throughout Sumatra as well as the smaller island of Siberut from 1990 to 2000 and applying a statistical approach generally known as "propensity score matching", David Gaveau and colleagues discovered that "a reduction in deforestation charges within Sumatran safeguarded locations has promoted safety,Microsoft Office 2007 Standard, as an alternative to deforestation,Office Pro Plus 2007, in adjacent unprotected land lying within ten km of protected place boundaries."

"We report the absence of a 'detrimental neighborhood leakage' result all around Sumatran reserves, indicating that Sumatran PAs have not attracted population progress and advancement tasks along their boundary," lead writer David Gaveau, a researcher in the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology of the University of Kent, instructed mongabay.com by way of e mail. "Instead, this research offers proof for the existence of a 'beneficial neighborhood leakage' effect. It seems that reducing deforestation inside Sumatran guarded locations has promoted safety to adjacent unprotected locations."
But Gaveau and colleagues caution that their findings could be explained by demographic adjustments — specifically depopulation of rural regions due to urbanization — instead of the influence of conservation efforts extending beyond park boundaries.
"Whether Sumatran secured regions extend their conservation influence beyond their boundary may prove controversial, because enhanced law enforcement and ecotourism activities on private lands around safeguarded locations aren't well developed on the island of Sumatra," they write. "The unexpected existence of a beneficial leakage effect that conserves forests adjacent to safeguarded areas may be explained by an island-wide decreasing population progress influence near Sumatran guarded places as human population moves closer to urban centers."
