An important remnant of Janette Dimery's wedding day in 1959 is a centrepiece of an exhibition at Broadgreen House in Nelson.
Her white lace gown with pleated net and veil of satin and embroidered tulle features in the exhibition Wedded Bliss which celebrates 100 years of Victorian and veteran wedding gowns. It has been timed to coincide with the royal wedding next week.
Mrs Dimery 2011 prom dresses, who is one of the Broadgreen Society's most treasured and long-serving volunteers, married Peter Dimery in Auckland's Greenlane Congregational church on March 21, 1959. They moved to Nelson a few years later when Mr Dimerywas transferred by his employer.
Mrs Dimery, nee Hadley Black Prom Dresses, remembered her father's concern when the guest list spilled over 100 people.
"Dad said he'd give us 50 to elope when the guest list got out of hand Short Prom Dresses," she said.
Mr Dimery remembered their wedding as being held on a "beautiful day", with the reception at a venue in Cornwall Park.
Mrs Dimery's dress cost 42 at a time the average wage was between 14 and 15 per week. It was made by Auckland dressmaking firm Lily Elsie Princess Dresses, from a picture Mrs Dimery saw in a book. She said it was exciting returning weeks later to find the dress was exactly what she wanted.
"I loved it straight away plus size prom dresse 2011," she said.
The exhibition, which is spread across Broadgreen's meeting room and throughout the historic house, also features a late 1920s pink silk with cream "chemical" lace, and an off-white silk gown made out of a parachute at a time when materials were scarce.
Broadgreen Society chairwoman Helen Le Cren said many of the gowns were from Broadgreen's own collection and others, like Mrs Dimery's, were lent specially for the exhibition.
Mrs Le Cren said a challenge with displaying authentic old clothes was that people were smaller than now, and the mannequins now were often too big for the gowns.
It was also common in Victorian times for brides to get married at home, a theme reflected in the displays in Broadgreen House.
"It was quite a journey to get to a church so many got married at home. Visitors also had to travel long distances Ball Gowns, so they often stayed in the home too," exhibition committee member Diane Ramsay said.
She said most dresses in the collection were handmade.
The exhibition is marked with explanatory footnotes, including one in the bridal suite which quotes an excerpt from a 19th-century manual, Instructions and Advice for the Young Bride. It states that contrary to belief "some young women did anticipate their wedding night ordeal with curiosity and pleasure".

A special high tea has been organised to be held in the conservatory at Broadgreen House next Friday afternoon, April 29 Prom Dresses 2011, for couples celebrating their wedding anniversary on the day of the royal wedding. So far two couples, both married on that day in 1967 Pink Prom Dresses, had registered to take part. Mrs Le Cren said more were welcome but numbers were limited. Reservations could be made by phoning Broadgreen House on 03 547 0403.
Wedded Bliss is open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm until May 15. Entry charges are $6 adults, $5 senior citizens and $2 for children.
