MEXICO CITY (MNI) - Retail sales in Mexico increased 3.0% in January compared to a year earlier, while wholesale sales came roaring back, with a 6.0% surge after a nearly flat reading in December, national statistics institute INEGI reported Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the non-financial service sector index rose 2.4% year-over-year, much slower than the 6.4% increase in December, but still the 11th consecutive gain, INEGI said in a separate report. Service sector employment posted a 3.2% increase, double the previous month.
INEGI cited increased retail sales for vehicles, textiles, clothing accessories and
puma shoes; hardware and glass; and computers and interior decorating,

In the wholesale sector, INEGI noted increased sales mainly trucks; machinery; agricultural raw materials; and equipment for agricultural, industrial and service sectors.
Employment in both sectors were solid for another month with retail jobs increasing 2.7%, the eighth consecutive increase after 23 straight declines, and close to the 2.9% gain in December, which was the largest since October 2006.
Wholesale jobs also kept an upward trend for an ninth month, adding 2.6%, beating the prior month's 2.5% increase, which was the largest since May 2005.
The wage picture was modestly positive, with retail pay again essentially flat, rising 0.2% from January 2010, though that was an improvement from the six straight declines through November. Wholesale pay rebounded, rising 1.2% after a 2.6% drop in December, the first increase after four straight declines.
On a seasonably adjusted basis, retail sales slipped 0.13% compared to the prior month when sales rose 0.68%, while wholesale sales jumped 2.13% after a 0.8% drop in December, INEGI reported.
Employment slipped 0.15% in the retail sector month-over-month, erasing half the 0.31% gain in the prior month, but rose 0.31% in the wholesale sector. Retail wages jumped 1.53% after the 0.83% drop in December, and increased 0.51% in wholesale.
The service sector index jumped 1.43% compared to December, seasonally adjusted, while employment increased 0.79%, INEGI said.
