Perhaps the return of exiled Earl (currently on enforced sabbatical in Samoa) will bring the real revolution. Maybe the excellent Frank Ocean will be able to bring an edge to r’n’b that NeYo and others can’t. What’s certain is that the misanthropes have reinvigorated hip hop in an important way. What is less certain is how capable they are of leading the onward march to new depths lyricism and novel styles. The answer, I expect, will be debated on the Internet relentlessly. Until the next tape comes out, I’d rather just wait.
OFWGKTA. As an avid apostle of the urban blogosphere in 2011, those seven letters have followed me more than the letters MBDTF (‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’) did in 2010. Just as Kanye’s strange scrabble answer stood for far more than thirteen excellent tracks made in Hawaii, so this one has come to occupy a symbolism on the internet amounting to far more than the sum of its parts.
For those who don’t already know, our seven letters stand for the rather bizarre name of a young rap collective from the West Coast, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. As their name might suggest, they are angry and they are interesting and they do not make a lot of sense. Their constituent members include a ghoulish character in strange attire (Tyler the Creator), a juvenile psychopath in absentia (Earl), and the possible future of r’n’b, slow jam extraordinaire Frank Ocean. Their subject matters fall under the ‘not for the faint hearted’ variety, so read no further if rape,

Perhaps it’s best then just to take Goblin out of Odd Future and judge it for what it is: an intriguing but somewhat underdeveloped first effort. There are positives and negatives. On the plus side, Tyler tells a good dystopian tale. He’s keen to distance himself from the horrorcore label,

It’s a terrible shame then that he proceeds to repeat the same sort of narrative again and again, interrupted only by a couple of surprisingly emo relationship tracks (‘She’, featuring Frank Ocean, is a great Odd Future take on romance). After the initial shock value, the lyrics fails to resonate, or even interest,

In fact, a juvenile tendency seems to loiter around the whole album, encapsulated in the infantile anarchy of lines like ‘Kill people burn s***, f*** school’, which some fans seem to treat as the greatest political statement ever heard. Whilst such excitement has an effect to stun and stimulate live (you only need to see the Odd Future performance on Jimmy Fallon’s show to witness their mesmerising energy), and can often be very humorous, if falls rather flat on a full length album, perhaps because Tyler doesn’t actually have as much to say as many of his more mainstream counterparts (J Cole, Drake, even Lil Wayne). I won’t give away the concept of Tyler’s album,
