(CNN) -- Authorities shut down a important airport in St. Louis after cumbersome winds from a caustic storm occasioned significant damage, minced skylights and sent debris rainy down on passengers.

"All the windows were busted. ...The airport looks like a battle region," Elizabeth Rastberger, 32, told CNN's iReport.
Rastberger said she had been waiting to elect up a friend when the storm hit. After an commander exclaimed "obtain downstairs," she took cover in a women's toilet with about 20 others.
"Kids were crying," she said. "A matron had a busted proboscis. Everyone was too freaked out to talk."
The reported tornado tangled metal and blew out plate-glass windows in the airport's main terminal, witnesses said.
Winds likewise blew off gates at a baggage-claim area, St. Louis County Police Chief Col. Tim Fitch told reporters.
"It's extraordinary to me that more people weren't hurt," he said.
