The EU announced that the 48-year-old Farinas was chosen as this year's winner of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in October. The EU said Farinas has spent years in confinement and gone on hunger strikes 23 times as a non-violent means of fighting oppression in Cuba.

Cuban dissident Guillermo Farinas has been awarded the European Parliament's Sakharov human rights prize in absentia.
The prize is named for the late Soviet nuclear scientists and dissident Andrei Sakharov.
Farinas is the third winner from Cuba to receive the Sakharov Prize, which comes with a $70,
