In Focus
Schooling World Forum (January 11, 2011). OET Director Karen Cator presented with the Education World Forum in London, a gathering of dozens of Education Ministers from around the world along with other training leaders. Discovering Registry (February 2011). The Department of Education and the Department of Defense are actively seeking participation in an exciting new joint project, the Grasping Registry, which is designed to ensure that educators, learners, innovators, and the general public can access learning resources easily from a variety of platforms—websites, community portals, and other repositories of digital understanding resources. Starting February 28,

As of September 30, the Knowing Registry will form a permanent network of digital learning resource providers. It will enable each provider to share its content with any other repository or resource aggregator that wants to harvest it. With this integration, a user need search only a single website to find resources produced from many sites. The Finding out Registry will be robust, having no single point of failure or control, and flexible, allowing different levels of participation. The Connected Online Communities of Practice project will steward a scalable, sustainable ecology of online communities in schooling to improve teacher and leader effectiveness, enhance student grasping and increase productivity. There are already many online communities through which educators can connect with people and resources,

Through more efficient and coordinated online participation, education professionals will be better able to share practices, access experts, and solve problems that require systemic solutions in order to improve the opportunity to learn. The first iteration of the project report will be published in March 2011. Nationwide Training Data Model (NEDM) (October 2010). The NEDM Version 3.0 is an expansion of a U.S. Department of Schooling project to develop a catalogue of data used in schooling and a description of the relationships among those data. Its mission is to create and maintain an open framework for schooling data systems based on current standards. It contains all federal P-20 reporting requirements (including HHS, Labor, and Agriculture as well as ED), linkages among those data elements, and a functional view of data currently used in the teaching and understanding process. Among many new features,
