Consignment shop in Greenwich expands with teen venture
"Going green with clothes" through recycling is Ellen Atkinson's concept for her second consignment shop. Her first Prom Dresses 2011, Consigned Designs for women and her second Black prom dresses, CD 2, are both on Mason Street in the Village Square shopping center in Greenwich. She also owns Magaschoni Short prom dresses, an upscale women's shop.
With no background in retailing, this former schoolteacher bought Consigned Designs five years ago. CD 2, which opened this month, is for preteens and teens. "It's my girly thing Petite dresses, having six sons," she says. Niece Caroline Robben - her 13 year-old inspiration has advised on store design. "The colors are pink, white and black. There are cute little seating areas for chatting with friends." A grand opening is planned sometime this spring.
"There is an abundance of lovely things hanging cheap grad dresses, unworn, in teens' closets," she said. Her store filled in 30 days. Ellen goes on buying trips for inexpensive accessories and gifts. She's seen no cattiness over recycling, girls are excited about bringing in clothes. "Teens are in constant flux, changing body shape all the time."
CD 2 takes 50 percent for clothes sold. A $60 top from Abercrombie's will sell for $20 and the girl gets $10. Girls who can't spend $150-plus on a prom or party dresses Cocktail dresses, can spend $50 for something special.
No advertising cheap long prom dresses, Atkinson sent flyers to the schools, connected with PTAs and is promoting on Facebook. "Girls are more geared to Facebook than print ads."
"Girls can donate clothes for a team or club with the money going to their group Pink prom dresses," said Atkinson. "We also have casual and sports clothes. Teens are learning that consignment/recycling is good for the community. Plus, they make money on things they don't wear."
Her competition is a huge thrift shop benefiting the Greenwich Hospital and a store called Second Time Around for women. Part of a 26-store chain, they take 60 percent with the consignor getting 40 percent.
Atkinson loves to put outfits together and she's open to trying new things to suit her market, such as flexible hours. And, consignment makes a great deal of sense in a down economy.
