Memphis Prom Closet provides dresses for Northside High School girls





It didn't take long for Kevesha States to find the perfect prom dress.
The full-length, light pink gown with ruching on one side, silver beading and gauzy straps caught her eye on the hanger and fit her perfectly right off the rack.
States, 17, didn't worry about price tags while shopping because she knew the more than 250 dresses in front of her were well within her price range.
In fact, they were free.
States was one of about 50 juniors and seniors at Northside High School to benefit from Memphis Prom Closet, an event established this year to provide financially limited girls the tools needed to participate in an American rite of passage.
"This is really nice," States said, smiling. "It gives people who may not have enough money the chance to find something special."
Lori Spicer Bridal prom dresses, a member of Girl Talk Memphis, a mentoring program Short Prom Dresses, organized the giveaway. She said she got the idea last year after learning that Northside principal Lowell Winston often bought formal attire for students who wouldn't be able to go to the prom otherwise.
"I thought to myself, 'I know people would get into this A-Line prom dresses,'" she said. "And I've been overwhelmed with the response. I love when the community comes together like this."
Tiny sequined numbers cocktail dresses petite, floor-length strapless satins, and funky cropped dresses with tulle ruffles hung from bookshelves in the school library, and girls rotated through the room in groups while R&B music filled the air.
In a nearby classroom, volunteer Stephanie Nelson Bridesmaid dresses, also a certified makeup artist Green prom dresses, unloaded her supplies and gave quick lessons.
"You don't want your makeup to be too overdone or trendy, or you'll look back at your pictures in 20 years and go, 'Oh, my God, what was I thinking?'" she told the girls.
Farther down the hall, a representative from the Regional Medical Center at Memphis talked about the dangers of drinking and driving White prom dresses, and later, speakers hit on topics such as etiquette, abstinence and safe-###### practices.
Next to the impromptu dressing area in the library, sewing machines were employed for on-the-spot alterations, and the girls even got a bit of bling (costume jewelry) to complete their ensembles.
"Mostly we don't get anything like this Low V-neck dresses," said Diamonique McClung bridesmaid dresses, 17. "To me, this is a big deal. I've been waiting on prom since I was a sophomore."
Northside's prom is scheduled for May 6, but the students have yet to come up with enough money to afford a venue for the big day. Spicer said she plans to focus her attention on that issue next.
